About
About Sonora Slater
I am a freelance writer based in Sacramento with a focus on community features, food/coffee, travel guides, and the arts. Much of my writing centers around the Sacramento region, but wherever I’m writing about, I try to capture the character of a place. My work has appeared in Comstock’s, The Dirt Davis, The Sacramento Bee, Route Magazine, and Oh Reader, among other publications.
I got my start as a news anchor at Nevada County Now, where we launched a weekly news show in the midst of the pandemic. From there, I started working for The California Aggie, UC Davis’ student-run newspaper, where I continued to work for the rest of my time at the university, first as a copy editor, then science writer, then as campus news editor and finally as the editor-in-chief.
During that time, I spent a summer interning for The Sacramento Bee, and fell in love with writing about this city while working on articles with a wide range of topics, from one that took a deep dive into pedestrian and bicycle safety on city streets, to another where I interviewed Pixar animators who were born and raised in Sacramento.
After I graduated in 2024, I moved to midtown Sacramento and shifted to working as a freelance writer. In addition to writing, I also have experience with multimedia, including audio editing and podcasting, creating social media content, filming and editing long-form videos, and more.
I’m available for written or multimedia assignments. I’m drawn to stories with lots of personality and a positive or hopeful angle, but I’m open to hear any ideas.
